Knowing Your Destination
Reflection
知止 carries two meanings at once — and they belong together. 止 as stopping: ceasing from restless striving, pausing the noise. 止 as endpoint or goal: knowing your true destination, the resting place you are meant to arrive at.
These cannot be separated. You can only stop rightly when you know what you are stopping for. The reason we are so busy, so scattered, so endlessly searching is that we have forgotten our destination. We run everywhere because we don’t know where home is.
But when you know your destination, you don’t have to search and busy yourself anymore. A traveler who knows where he is going walks with direction and can even rest along the way. The endpoint is settled. The wandering ends — not because you gave up, but because you arrived at the knowing.
This is what the Psalmist means: “Be still, and know that I am God.” The stillness is not empty. It has an endpoint. God Himself is the 止 — the goal, the resting place, the destination. You stop because you know where you are going, and Who you are going to.
Today’s Practice
- 知止 — Know your goal. Name it: God Himself. Not a task, not an outcome — Him.
- 定 — Be stable. You don’t have to search today. You’ve found your destination.
- 静 — Be calm. Let the noise settle. Stop running.
- 安 — Be at peace. Rest in the truth that God is God, and you are already home in Him.
- 虑 — Think. Now bring your questions and decisions before Him — from rest, not panic.
- 得 — Receive. Listen. He may speak. Or He may simply give you peace. Either is grace.
Prayer
Teach me to stop searching and striving,
because I have already found my resting place in You.
Quiet the noise within me.
Settle my heart.
Let me be still — and know that You are God.
From this rest, lead me, think through me, and provide.
In the stillness, let me know You. Amen.
And the stillness comes when you know your destination.
