COVENANT OF LOVE - Deuteronomy 7:9

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”

Context: On the plains of Moab, before Israel entered the Promised Land, Moses anchored their assurance not in their own strength but in God’s unchanging character. The Hebrew word for “faithful” (aman) means firm, stable, reliable — the same root behind our word amen. The “covenant of love” is hesed: steadfast, loyal, covenantal love.

God — Creator and Omnipotent; He Is Able

“The LORD your God is God.” He is Yahweh — the self‑existent, all‑powerful Creator who spoke the universe into being. His power is not limited by circumstances, opposition, or time.

Your confidence rests not in your own ability, but in the unlimited power of the One who made you.

Faithfulness — He Never Changes Nor Breaks His Promise

“He is the faithful God.” He does not shift with the times, change His mind capriciously, or go back on His word. His faithfulness is not a mood — it is His nature. He cannot deny Himself.

Every promise God has made is secure — not because you deserve it, but because He cannot deny His own character.

Of Love — Bonded by a Covenant

“Keeping his covenant of love.” The Hebrew hesed means steadfast, loyal, covenantal love. God bound Himself to His people by covenant, and He maintains it out of loyal love — ultimately expressed at the cross.

You are not loved because you are lovable. You are loved because God has bound Himself to you in covenant — and He keeps His commitments.

Our Response — Obedience in Love

“Those who love him and keep his commandments.” Love and obedience are inseparable. We do not obey to earn His love; we obey because we have received it. Obedience is the fruit, not the root, of salvation.

Let your obedience be an act of worship, not a duty to perform. When you remember His faithful love, obedience becomes a grateful response.

When doubts arise about whether God is still with you, Deuteronomy 7:9 directs your gaze away from your circumstances and toward His unchanging nature. His faithfulness does not fluctuate with your performance.

Prayer

Faithful God, You are Creator and Omnipotent — able to keep every promise. You never change nor break Your word. You have bound Yourself to us in a covenant of love that never fails. Forgive us for doubting Your faithfulness or obeying out of mere duty. Teach us to love You with whole hearts, and let our obedience be a joyful response to Your steadfast love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
