Plan · Trust · Rest - A devotion on Matthew 6:34

Plan · Trust · Rest

A devotion on Matthew 6:34 — “Do not worry about tomorrow”
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”— Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

Rev. Paul Sing-Hoh Hang: “Worry is a sin of unbelief in God the Father! … All we earthly people truly have is today only. We should focus on today's tasks and, relying on God's guidance, accomplish what needs to be done today.”

The Myth: “Don’t worry” ≠ “Don’t plan”

Some hear Jesus’ command and think it means drifting through life with no direction — no savings, no goals, no preparation. That is not what He taught. The Bible is full of planners:

  • Josephstored grain for seven years of famine (Genesis 41).
  • Nehemiahsurveyed Jerusalem’s walls before rebuilding (Nehemiah 2).
  • Paulmade missionary travel plans (Acts 15:36).
  • The antprepares in summer for winter (Proverbs 6:6–8).

Planning is wise, stewardship, and responsible. Worry is not planning — worry is the emotional torment that comes when we believe the outcome depends entirely on us.

The Truth: We Plan, but God Directs

Proverbs 16:9“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

James 4:13–15 doesn’t condemn planning; it condemns arrogant planning — as if God does not exist. Planning is our responsibility. The outcome is God’s.

Worry vs. Planning

Worry

  • Anxious, fearful, obsessive
  • Repeats the same problem endlessly
  • Tries to control what it cannot
  • Says, “What if it all goes wrong?”
  • Robs today of peace

Planning

  • Calm, thoughtful, prayerful
  • Seeks solutions and takes action
  • Surrenders the result to God
  • Says, “I do my part, trust God for the rest”
  • Uses today wisely

How to Plan Without Worrying

Rev. Hang’s sermon gives us a beautiful model through the four lepers in 2 Kings 7:

  • Assessthe situation wisely.
  • Planthe best course of action.
  • Actin faith, not fear.
  • Surrenderthe outcome to God.
  • Sharethe blessings with others.
The royal officer’s mistake (2 Kings 7:2,17): He planned without faith — he saw the famine, did the math, and concluded “impossible.” He died seeing abundance but never tasting it. Planning without faith is just worry dressed up as strategy.
A Prayer for Those Who Plan
“Lord, thank You for giving me a mind to think and wisdom to plan. Help me to plan wisely — but not to cling to my plans as if they are set in stone. I lay my goals, schedule, and future before You. I will do my part today, and I will leave tomorrow in Your hands. Give me peace in the planning and faith in the waiting. Amen.”
☀️ A practical habit: Each morning, before your to-do list, pray:
“Lord, I plan my day, but I invite You to interrupt it. I set my goals, but I surrender the outcomes to You. I will work as if everything depends on me, and I will pray as if everything depends on You — because it does.”
Rev. Hang’s timeless message:
Worry about yesterday is useless — it is already forgiven.
Worry about tomorrow is faithless — it is already in God’s hands.
Today is the day of good news.
Plan wisely, act faithfully, trust completely, and share generously.
