David wrote this psalm at the dedication of the temple, but his heart was reflecting on a personal deliverance. He had been in a pit—perhaps of sickness, betrayal, or the consequences of his own sin. The night strips away our self-sufficiency. When the lights go out, we stop relying on our own vision, our own resources, and our own strength. We are forced to reach out—blindly, desperately—and grab hold of the only One who can see in the dark. Dependence is not a weakness; it is the very posture God created us for. The darkness is where we learn to depend on God in ways we never could in the daylight.

God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our feelings, our circumstances, or even our performance. It is tethered to His character. If He promised to never leave you nor forsake you, He won’t. If He promised to work all things for your good, He will. If He promised to complete the good work He started in you, He absolutely will finish it. The darkness is not a sign that God has abandoned you; it is often the very evidence that He is at work. A caterpillar does not grow in the sunlight—it grows in the cocoon, in the darkness, where everything is broken down and remade.

How do we live this out practically?
- Be Honest with God: When you are weeping, tell Him. The Psalms are full of raw emotion. God isn’t afraid of your tears.
