The End of the Four Pains - Revelation 21:4

Bringing Chinese Ancient Wisdom into Bible study brings better understanding.

The End of the Four Pains

A Devotion on Revelation 21:4 • 生 · 老 · 病 · 死
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.”
— Revelation 21:4 (NIV)

The Chinese sages long ago observed four inescapable sufferings: 生 (birth), 老 (aging), 病 (sickness), and 死 (death). These shadows fall over every life. Philosophy offers detachment. Religion offers rituals. But none can break the cycle.

Then comes the voice from the throne: “Behold, I am making all things new.”

God does not merely philosophize about suffering—He enters into it. He took on birth as a helpless infant. He experienced aging and weariness. He bore sickness and agony on the cross. And He swallowed death itself through His resurrection. He walked through every valley we fear.

And now He promises this: One day, He will personally wipe away every tear—not by ignoring pain, but by destroying its very sources.

生 (Birth) → new birth, imperishable
老 (Aging) → no decay, glorified body
病 (Sickness) → no more pain, complete healing
死 (Death) → no separation, swallowed in victory

Birth — no longer into a broken world, but a new birth into an imperishable inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-4).

Aging — no more decay; the body redeemed, glorified, eternal (Romans 8:23).

Sickness — no more pain; complete healing, a body that can never suffer again (Revelation 22:2).

Death — no more separation; death swallowed up in victory (Isaiah 25:8).

The old order has passed away. The four pains are on death row.

Until that final day, your tears are not wasted. God sees them, stores them, and promises to exchange every single one for joy. The very things that make you cry now are the very things He came to destroy forever.

🙏 Prayer
Father, You know the weight of birth, aging, sickness, and death that I carry. Thank You that You are not distant from my suffering—You entered into it. Give me hope today to endure, knowing the four pains are already defeated. Until the day You wipe away every tear, hold me close and remind me that my true home is with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🕯️ Go Deeper
Which of the four pains ( ) weighs heaviest on your heart today? Bring it honestly to God. He is not afraid of your tears—He came to wipe them away. Consider memorizing Revelation 21:4 as an anchor for your soul.
“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.”

One day, the foretaste becomes the feast. The tears become no more. The four pains become ancient history. And we will be home.
