COVENANT OF LOVE - Deuteronomy 7:9

 Deuteronomy 7:9 · NIV

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”
Context: On the plains of Moab, before Israel entered the Promised Land, Moses anchored their assurance not in their own strength but in God’s unchanging character. The Hebrew word for “faithful” (aman) means firm, stable, reliable — the same root behind our word amen. The “covenant of love” is hesed: steadfast, loyal, covenantal love.
1

God — Creator and Omnipotent; He Is Able

The LORD your God is God.” He is Yahweh — the self‑existent, all‑powerful Creator who spoke the universe into being. His power is not limited by circumstances, opposition, or time.

Your confidence rests not in your own ability, but in the unlimited power of the One who made you.
2

Faithfulness — He Never Changes Nor Breaks His Promise

He is the faithful God.” He does not shift with the times, change His mind capriciously, or go back on His word. His faithfulness is not a mood — it is His nature. He cannot deny Himself.

Every promise God has made is secure — not because you deserve it, but because He cannot deny His own character.
3

Of Love — Bonded by a Covenant

Keeping his covenant of love.” The Hebrew hesed means steadfast, loyal, covenantal love. God bound Himself to His people by covenant, and He maintains it out of loyal love — ultimately expressed at the cross.

You are not loved because you are lovable. You are loved because God has bound Himself to you in covenant — and He keeps His commitments.
4

Our Response — Obedience in Love

Those who love him and keep his commandments.” Love and obedience are inseparable. We do not obey to earn His love; we obey because we have received it. Obedience is the fruit, not the root, of salvation.

Let your obedience be an act of worship, not a duty to perform. When you remember His faithful love, obedience becomes a grateful response.
💡 Application
Anchor your assurance in His character, not your feelings.

When doubts arise about whether God is still with you, Deuteronomy 7:9 directs your gaze away from your circumstances and toward His unchanging nature. His faithfulness does not fluctuate with your performance.

❤️
Let love fuel your obedience.

The verse pairs “love him” with “keep his commandments.” Obedience that flows from a cold sense of duty quickly becomes exhausting. But when you remember His covenant love — shown ultimately through Christ — obedience becomes a grateful response rather than a burden to carry.

🌱
Think generationally.

The promise extends to a thousand generations. Your faithfulness today is not just about your own walk with God. It plants seeds of covenant love that can echo through your family line and beyond.

“What a rich blessing to have your children and your children’s children… to a thousand generations to have a relationship with God.”
Prayer

Faithful God, You are Creator and Omnipotent — able to keep every promise. You never change nor break Your word. You have bound Yourself to us in a covenant of love that never fails. Forgive us for doubting Your faithfulness or obeying out of mere duty. Teach us to love You with whole hearts, and let our obedience be a joyful response to Your steadfast love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Gratitude for the Partnership Philippians 1:3

Gratitude for the Partnership
Philippians 1:3
“I thank my God every time I remember you.”

Paul writes from a Roman prison, chained and awaiting trial. Yet his opening words aren't despair—they're thanksgiving. And the source isn't his circumstances. It's people. The believers in Philippi. Their partnership in the gospel made his memory a place of worship.

What the Philippians Did — Paul’s Reasons for Thanks
Partnered in the gospel — from day one, active and costly (1:5)
Gave financially — repeatedly, when others didn't (4:15–16)
Sent gifts & a messenger — Epaphroditus, meeting his needs (4:18)
Shared in his suffering — entered his hardship, risked reputation (4:14)
Defended & confirmed the gospel — stood with him publicly (1:7)
Continued in faithful obedience — grew, persevered (1:6; 2:12–13)
Loved and cared for him — genuine affection, renewed concern (1:8; 4:10)
Stayed loyal — never abandoned the mission (1:5)

They didn't just feel supportive — they acted. They gave, sent, suffered, stood, and stayed.

What This Means for Us
  • Memory is a spiritual discipline. Paul could have rehearsed his chains. Instead, he rehearsed the faithful. What do you rehearse?
  • People are gifts to be thanked for, not problems to be managed. Can you name three people whose memory makes you grateful? Thank God for them today.
  • Gratitude can exist in hard places. Paul was in prison. You may be in a hard season too. Gratitude doesn't deny the difficulty—it refuses to let it have the final word.
Father, thank You for the people You've placed in my life—those who have pointed me to Jesus, prayed for me, and walked with me. Forgive me for the times I've remembered others with criticism instead of gratitude. Teach me to see Your work in them, and make my memory a place of worship. In Jesus' name, amen.
One action step: Text or call one person today and simply say, “I thanked God when I thought of you.” You might be the reason someone else's hard day turns toward hope.

Connecting the Dots - Thanksgiving Before the Silver Lining · Psalm 9:1

Connecting the Dots

Thanksgiving Before the Silver Lining · Psalm 9:1
“I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” — Psalm 9:1 (NIV)

Thanksgiving Is a Choice

David doesn’t start with his problems—he starts with praise. “With all my heart” means the will, mind, and emotions are fully engaged. Gratitude is often a deliberate decision, not just a feeling. We choose to thank God before the emotion catches up.

The Silver Lining in the Dark Cloud

Gratitude is not denial of the darkness—it is the grace to see God’s light within it. Joseph, Job, Paul, and Jesus all saw through the cloud. Sometimes the silver lining is simply this: He is with me. Immanuel. God with us in the storm.

Biblical examples of seeing the silver lining:

  • Joseph — “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
  • Job — “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” (Job 1:21)
  • Paul & Silas — Sang hymns at midnight in a prison cell. (Acts 16:25)
  • Jesus — “Not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Steve Jobs: Dots Connect Backward

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
— Steve Jobs, Stanford Commencement, 2005

“Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again.”

Jobs stumbled onto a truth Scripture has taught for millennia: we live forward, but we understand backward. God is the One who connects the dots. The worst thing can become the best thing. The cross felt like defeat—it became salvation.

The Tension We Live In

David wrote Psalm 9 after the victory. He had hindsight. But can we give thanks before we see the silver lining? Can we thank God in the cloud, not just after it lifts? Sometimes the dots never connect in this life. Yet we trust the Author.

Reflect:

• Looking back, where can you now see God’s hand in a dark cloud?

• Looking forward, what are you still waiting to understand?

• Right now, what would it look like to give thanks—not for the pain, but in it?

Prayer

Lord, I can’t always see how the dots connect. I can’t always find the silver lining. But I choose to trust You—the One who sees the end from the beginning. Thank You that even the things meant to break me, You can use to make me. Give me eyes to see Your hand, backward and forward, and a heart that gives thanks in the waiting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Going Deeper

Read Psalm 9. Notice how David moves from personal thanksgiving (vv. 1–2) to declaring God’s character (vv. 7–10) to calling others to praise (v. 11). Thanksgiving is the doorway into deeper worship. Let it lead you there today.

Why Do People Slowly Drift Away from God?

Why Do People Slowly Drift Away from God?

Spiritual Vigilance and Transformation Learned from the Tragedy of King Saul
<source: Ps John Liu's Sermon preached on 19/9/2026 at CityLight Community Church>

Saul did not become corrupt in one day. He drifted little by little — each small compromise carrying him further from God's will. This is not merely an Old Testament historical account, but a crucial warning for every believer running their daily spiritual race.

Point 1: Small Disobedience

In 1 Samuel 13, facing the pressure of the Philistine army and the scattering of his people, Saul acted out of anxiety and crossed the line by offering the sacrifice himself. He thought it was just a small mistake to encourage the people, but in reality, he began to believe that his own methods and timing were more reliable than God's.

"The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board found that most major air disasters are not caused by one catastrophic mistake, but by a series of small errors that accumulate into tragedy."

Spiritual life works the same way: rarely does anyone leave God overnight; it usually starts with one small compromise, followed by another. Every small act of obedience shapes our lives and our future.

Point 2: Pride Silences God's Voice

In 1 Samuel 15, God commanded Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites, yet Saul kept the best livestock and spared King Agag. When confronted by Samuel, Saul wrapped his disobedience in spiritual language: "The people saved these sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord."

"To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams." — 1 Samuel 15:22

What God wants is never our excuses or religious rituals, but genuine, heartfelt obedience. When pride sets in due to success or experience, people stop listening to God (through Scripture and the Holy Spirit) and to loving correction from spiritual companions (church and community).

Point 3: Drifting Leads to Isolation

In his final years, Saul lived in fear and paranoia, even isolating himself from his son Jonathan. When God no longer answered him, Saul resorted to seeking guidance from a medium at Endor. When we stop obeying, we begin seeking direction in all the wrong places.

  • Sin: Separates us from God.
  • Pride: Separates us from people.
  • Isolation: We become strangers to ourselves, losing our most vital relationships.

Hope and Turnaround: From Old Testament Saul to New Testament Paul

Although Old Testament Saul ended his life in tragedy, Scripture does not end with failure. New Testament Saul (Paul) once persecuted the church, yet he met the risen Lord on the road to Damascus, surrendered, and was completely transformed.

The Hope of the Gospel: Grace brings people back to God; no one drifts beyond the reach of His grace[. The cross proves that no matter how many times we have failed, whenever we are willing to turn back, God is ready to receive us!

Daily Applications

1. Practice Daily Obedience

Obedience is a daily choice in small matters, not just one grand decision. Humble yourself before God daily.

2. Keep a Teachable Heart

Never let success or age make you unteachable. Stay open to God's Word and correction from others.

3. Continually Return to God

When you realize you are drifting, stop making excuses and repent immediately. It is never too late![

Conclusion: How We Finish Matters

What truly destroyed Saul was not a lack of ability or strong enemies, but that he slowly stopped obeying God. God cares not just about how we start, but even more about how we finish.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7

Why Do People Slowly Drift Away from God? —

(Small Disobedience)

(Pride Silences God's Voice)

(Drifting Leads to Isolation)

(Daily Applications)

Change Your Mind, Change Your Life - Romans 8:6 & 2 Corinthians 10:5

Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

A Devotion on Romans 8:6 & 2 Corinthians 10:5

Scripture Focus

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6 (NIV)
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

The Real Battlefield

When we want to change, we start with behavior. We make rules, set boundaries, white-knuckle temptation — and fail. The real battlefield is not actions; it’s thoughts. Behavior is the fruit of the mind.

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” — Proverbs 23:7

Two Minds, Two Destinies

  • Mind governed by the flesh: natural, unrenewed, autopilot. End: death — spiritual decay, numbing, coping.
  • Mind governed by the Spirit: surrendered, renewed, led by the Holy Spirit. Result: life and peace.

The question is not if your mind will be governed, but by what.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

We reach for “easy buttons” to cope with feelings of inadequacy, perfectionism, and pressure. Unexamined thoughts create narratives that say we need or deserve a drink to turn off stress.

“I’m not enough”“I can’t handle this”“I need a drink”“I deserve this”

These are “arguments and pretensions” (2 Cor 10:5) — lies dressed as truth. We don’t have to believe every thought we think.

Filtering Thoughts Through God’s Truth

The Lie

  • Worth = to-do list
  • Value = job performance
  • Acceptance = perfection

God’s Truth

  • Loved with everlasting love (Jer 31:3)
  • Chosen, adopted, redeemed (Eph 1:4-7)
  • No condemnation (Rom 8:1)
  • Child of God (1 John 3:1)

Practical Application: The Pause & the Pivot

1Pause. Don’t react. Breathe. Recognize the moment of choice.
2Ask. What is my mind telling me? What story am I believing? What am I feeling?
3Identify the lie. Name the thought. What is the “easy button” promising?
4Pivot to truth. Take it captive. Replace it with Scripture. Declare who you are in Christ.
5Choose. From a renewed mind, choose your action. You are no longer a slave.

This is not positive thinking — it’s biblical thinking. Renewing the mind.

A Prayer for a Renewed Mind

Heavenly Father, I confess I’ve let my mind run on autopilot. I’ve believed lies about myself, about You, and about what I need to be okay. I’ve reached for easy buttons instead of reaching for You. Forgive me.

Thank You that I am not stuck. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who gives me power to take every thought captive. Today, I choose to set my mind on the Spirit. I reject the lies and embrace Your truth. When pressure comes, remind me to pause and pivot. Help me see every tempting thought as an opportunity to run to You.

Fill my mind with Your Word. Fill my heart with Your peace. Let my life be governed not by the flesh, but by Your Spirit. I want the life and peace only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Key Takeaway: You cannot change your behavior without changing your mind. But you cannot change your mind without the power of the Holy Spirit. Set your mind on Him today. Take every thought captive. Watch as He transforms your life from the inside out.
