What does Biblical Success look like?

Biblical Success is "A New Identity & Good Relationships with God and men"

  • #1 to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and

Accept Jesus Christ's Salvation and be adopted into God's family

  • #2 to love one another as he commanded us.

Have loving relationships with others as testimony to our new identity & His love.

  • 1 John 3:23-24
    • "And this is his command:
    • The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us."

know must be accompanied by obeying

  • #3 "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and

Our priority is "Thy kingdom come & Thy will be done on earth". Let God's standards and rules be established on earth by us living them out.

  • #4 All these things will be given to you as well."

All our needs for living well on earth will be met by God.

  • Matthew 6:33
    • These things in context are food/wealth, health/living, glory/clothes.

Such external success comes from prioritizing the Kingdom of God and living in accordance with His righteousness.

  • "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"

Soul is more important than external possessions of wealth. Soul priority is doing point #1.#2,#3,#4.

    • Mark 8:36 (NIV):
  • #5 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law."

Christ's character is the measurement standard.

Success is defined as how Christ-like we are.

    • Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV):
  • In summary
    • success is about living in a harmonious relationship with God and men., enjoying peace/joy, health, wealth, respect, and eternal life. e.g. Ps 23v6 as pointed out in the post:

Your identity(God's child) & relationships(with God and men) are more important than wealth. The rest of the post gives the specific principles to achieve the objectives of identity relationships and possessions.

The Uniquenss of The Gospel (3) - New Identity vs Trying to Be

How can you live a stress-free life?

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV): But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV): I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

All religions give us a set of rules such that by following them we may attain or become the saints or gods. It is doing first to become.

But the Gospel message is that God, through the Holy Spirit, gives you a new birth with a new identity. You are born into God's family,

John 1:12-13 (NIV): Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

We do good work because we are a good person to start with.  We don't do good to become good. Many rich people give to charity to gain a good name. Some become rich through dubious means but give generously as a cover-up or a sense of guilt.

Acting from our identity is simple and easy. Trying to be what we are not is a big struggle.

Believers must realize who they are and then act out from their being.

Live a stress-free life by knowing your identity in Christ first, and with the assurance and confidence just live out the new life. Fight from the position of victory against the enemy.

You don't have to struggle to become because you are already there, accepted and established, by the grace of God.

May God empower you in your walk with Him.

The following ChatGPT's improvement of my writing is very good, especially its rewrite of the bible verses. The meanings come out better. Hope you like it.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): In Christ, a profound transformation occurs—a new creation emerges. The old, with its limitations and shortcomings, fades away, making room for the arrival of the new and extraordinary.

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV): Embrace this truth: you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation—God's treasured possession. Your purpose is to proclaim the praises of the One who rescued you from darkness, ushering you into the brilliance of His divine light.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV): My former self has been crucified with Christ, no longer dictating my existence. Instead, Christ resides within me, and the life I now lead is a manifestation of faith in the Son of God, who demonstrated unparalleled love by sacrificing Himself for me.

Contrary to many religious doctrines that prescribe adhering to rules to achieve saintliness or divinity, the Gospel delivers a different message. Through the Holy Spirit, God orchestrates a rebirth within you, granting you a brand-new identity. You are not merely following a set of rules; you are born into God's family.

John 1:12-13 (NIV): For those who receive and believe in Him, the authority is given to become children of God. This birthright transcends natural lineage, human decisions, or the will of a spouse—it is a divine birth, a testament to being born of God.

Contrary to the notion of doing good to become good, believers understand that their actions flow from their inherent goodness. Riches gained through dubious means may lead some to give generously, but true goodness arises from a genuine and virtuous core.

Acting authentically from our identity is effortless compared to the struggle of trying to be something we're not. Believers, recognizing their true identity, are empowered to live out their calling confidently.

Understanding the "Be-Do-Have" principle in Grace-Based Doctrine enables believers to live from their identity, fostering growth and a natural progression in their faith journey. This liberating perspective allows believers to share the abundance of their transformed lives with others.

In the pursuit of a stress-free life rooted in the knowledge of one's identity in Christ, believers stand firm in victory, facing challenges with assurance and confidence.

May God's empowerment guide and strengthen you in your walk with Him.

The Uniquenss of The Gospel (2) - God's Love over Human Rebellion

Romans 5:8-9 NIV But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

While we are rebellious toward God, God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for us and justify us. God's love overcomes our rebellion. Here are a few keys we must take note of:

  1. God loves us in spite of our rebellion and sins. While we are denying God or even ridiculing God, God still loves us and does not hate us. Our sins do not stop God from loving us. God hates sins but not us, human beings. We need to separate sins that God hates from people whom God loves. Sins bound and harm us. God wants to free us from our tormenting sins.
  2. We cannot commit a sin that stops God from loving and saving us. The only way is by our rejection of His salvation offered freely to us.
  3. Once we accept His salvation, we are justified and rebirthed as God's children. Once born again as God's children, we will always be His. It is God who is responsible for us. He is holding our hands and not us trying to hold onto His hands. Our salvation is God's saving effort and not by our works at all.
So, let us live with the confidence that God is for us and is with us.  Live securely in the love of God.
Have a joy-filled Christmas.
Rom 8:38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

The Uniquenss of The Gospel (1) - God's Power over Human Wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 NIV My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

All philosophies and many religions are based on human wisdom. They are guidelines for living a good and purposeful life. They don't give us the power to follow them. Most of us have to try very hard to follow them. Even so, we may not find the answers to our struggles. The wisdom of humans is limited.

However, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not just simple, straightforward good news of God's salvation of mankind but is also accompanied by a demonstration of God's power to support its claim. It is God's wisdom with God's power to deliver the promises given to us. Without the demonstration of its power, the gospel message is empty.

Believers are to be joyful that our gospel is God's wisdom and power and not on the limited human wisdom. It is the answer to all our problems. Discover, understand, believe, and receive Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and Lord, and have a meaningful, peaceful, and joyful Christmas.

Lim Liat (c) 17-11-23

Here is ChapGPT rephrase of the above. Hope you are touched by it.

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (NIV) states, "My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power."

While numerous philosophies and religions are rooted in human wisdom, serving as valuable guides for leading purposeful lives, they often lack the inherent power to empower individuals. The pursuit of adhering to these principles can be arduous, and despite our best efforts, we may not unearth solutions to our struggles. Human wisdom, by its very nature, is limited.

In stark contrast, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not merely a straightforward proclamation of God's salvation for humanity; it is accompanied by a tangible demonstration of God's power, reinforcing its profound claims. This Gospel embodies God's wisdom fused with divine power, ensuring the fulfillment of the promises bestowed upon us. Without the manifestation of its inherent power, the gospel message remains hollow.

As believers, we rejoice in the realization that our gospel is grounded in God's wisdom and power, surpassing the constraints of human understanding. It serves as the ultimate solution to our myriad problems. To fully experience its transformative impact, one must explore, comprehend, believe, and accept Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Lord. Through this, a meaningful, peaceful, and joyful Christmas awaits.

What is the Most Important Virtue?

What is the Most Important Virtue?

Most people may suggest 'love'. But love could easily be misunderstood. Love alone may lead to abuse and spoiled 'kids'. As Paul defines love in 1 Cor 13 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth." We see love includes truth, no evil, etc.

Some will suggest "wisdom'. But wisdom is too abstract to be useful. It is the content of wisdom that will help us. What are the wise words for us to know? The Bible has many verses about wisdom. The foundational verse is Pro 9:10a The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; It is repeated in Pro 1:7,3:7,15:3; Ps 111:10, Job 28:28b; Ecc 12:13, etc.

Knowing that we seek and obey God's teaching. Which is:

  • The Seeking & Following.
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." - Matthew 6:33 (ESV) -
  • The Outcome of Doing:
"Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God." Philippians 1:11 -
  • The Blessing:
Proverbs 21:21: "Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor."
  • Deliverance:
Psa_34:19  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
The first is to seek Righteousness.
    What is Righteousness?

It is a state of being in the right relationship with God and others. Includes Loving God & Others like Self. If you take this definition, righteousness is about relationships and the objective of a relationship is about harmony. It is harmony between God and men and men to men. This harmony is achieved when we all pursue righteousness.

The following are keys to understanding righteousness.
    • #1 The objective is harmony; so this is the highest value.
      • “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9). two aspects of being righteous: doing the right thing (being blameless) and having a relationship with God (walking with God).

    • #2 Living in accordance with God's moral standards,
    • Confucius says "道不同不可与相为谋”
People with differing values cannot work together.
    • #3 It involves both faith and obedience --- Trusting God enough to follow His values.

      • Trust is the foundation of a relationship
      • Neh_9:8b And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.
    • #4 Seeking justice
      • "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love  mercy and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8 (NIV)

      • Deu_16:19  You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous.

    • #5 Having wisdom
      • judging needs wisdom to know right or wrong, truth or lies
      • Psa_37:30  The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.
    • #6 Kindness
      • Mat_25:37  Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
    • #7 being justified through faith in Jesus Christ.---Justification is needed when a relationship is broken
      • "The righteous will live by faith." - Romans 1:17 (NIV)
      • Rom 3:22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
Among the seven keys shown above, the key value for a lasting relationship is Justice - fairness. Whatever we do, we must ask, that it is fair to all. Fairness is not necessarily equal to equality. Fairness must compensate for the differences in people. Some people are tall, and some are short. Those who are short should be given stools to stand on so that they can reach the height of tall and get the same view of the football match. It is about getting all the people's needs satisfied.

We can learn much about the virtues from Sinology.

      国学

      Sinology

      • 鬼谷子《谋》圣人之制道, 在隐与匿. 非独忠、信、仁、义也, 中正而已矣’”.

Guiguzi's "Stratagem" says, "The sage's governance lies in concealment and secrecy. It is not only about loyalty, trust, benevolence, and righteousness; it is centered on being fair and just/upright alone."

        • 陈蒲清翻译:圣人制定谋略, 表现在隐密. ’不在于表面讲忠、信、仁、义, 只要内心中正就可以了”.

Chen Puqing's translation: "The sage formulates strategies, manifesting in secrecy. 'It is not merely about outward expressions of loyalty, trust, benevolence, and righteousness; as long as the inner self is upright, it suffices.'"

      • 《易乾文言》曰“义者,利之和也”
        • Book of Change - Confucius said righteousness is the harmony of benefits
      • 孟子四端: “恻隐之心,仁之端也;羞恶之心,义之端也;辞让之心,礼之端也;是非之心,智之端也。”

Mencius' Four Virtues: "The heart of compassion is the essence of benevolence; the heart of shame and dislike is the essence of righteousness; the heart of courtesy and modesty is the essence of propriety; the heart of right and wrong is the essence of wisdom."

      • 五德配五行,其中仁配木,礼配火,信配土,义配金,智配水

"The Five Virtues match the Five Elements, with benevolence corresponding to wood, propriety to fire, trustworthiness to earth, righteousness to metal, and wisdom to water.

        • 义是我拿刀杀羊代罪!

righteousness is using a knife to kill a lamb as a sacrifice for my sins

          • righteousness 义 meaning.png
The Chinese word for Righteousness is 义, and the complex form is 義 which has a lamb covering me, showing the subtitutional death of Christ the lamb for us. The ancient pictorial form is even more meaningful as shown below:
It is about a man carrying a weapon(together they stand for the word 我 me) to kill and sacrifice a lamb to cover our sin or to justify us!

In summary, the most important value is righteousness, which is to achieve harmony among different subjects (God and man, man and man) based on justice. But because man could not keep his side of the relationship since he committed sin, Jesus came as the sacrificial lamb to pay the price to justify men and to restore the relationship between God and men. To have good relationships, when making decisions and plans, please aim for fairness for all from their perspectives (not what we think is good for them). That is just right. That is righteousness.

The Prodigal Son Parable - The Chinese Perspective

      Younger, the Prodigal Son
      • accept his Father's love but ignore righteousness
      • "unconditional love" becomes his license to sin
      • The consequences become his teacher for him to realize his sin and the unconditional love gives him the confidence to return to his father.
      • Punishment may not lead to repentance.
      • Unconditional love does that. Else, the regrets and condemnation will lead to suicide
      Older, the Self-righteous Son
      • performance-based acceptance
      • focus on righteous behavior and ignore his father's unconditional love
      • his performance mindset cannot accept "unconditional" love.
      • living under such a belief causes one to be:
        • proud - I did it all by myself
        • condemning others
        • anger and jealousy for others' success
        • unforgiving
        • a life of stress and anxiety - within himself, he knows he fails to live up to the righteous standard in some if not many ways.
      The Chinese View
      • The balance of Love & Righteousness
        • Love has righteousness within
          • Romans 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
          • John 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments.
        • Righteousness must have love within
          • Romans 7:12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
          • Deuteronomy 28: NIV. If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
          • John 8:11 “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
          • Luke 15:24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
        • Love without righteousness leads to lust
        • Righteousness without love leads to brutality
        • The balance show of love (forgiving) or righteousness (discipline) will depend on the timing, situation, and the person involved
      • 从国学的观点看 浪子回头的寓言

From the perspective of traditional Chinese culture, the allegory of a prodigal son's repentance can be understood as follows:

        • 浪子只要父亲的爱而忽略了父亲的义的教导 大哥只是看到父亲的义的教诲而忽略了父亲无条件的爱。 在国学的观点里,爱和义是不可分割的 (阴阳的观念) 爱中有义,义中有爱。 只有爱而没有义会造成溺爱,欲望的放纵。 只有义而没有爱会造成残酷和孽待。 爱与义的表现要依照天时地利和各人的人性。 对有些人要处罚,有些只是警告,有些是饶恕。
        • The prodigal son seeks his father's love and disregards his father's teachings on righteousness,
        • The elder brother, on the other hand, only sees the father's moral teachings and overlooks the father's unconditional love.
        • In the viewpoint of traditional Chinese culture, love and righteousness are inseparable (in the concept of Yin and Yang).
        • There is righteousness in love, and there is love in righteousness.
        • Having only love without righteousness can lead to indulgence and unrestrained desires.
        • Having only righteousness without love can result in cruelty and harsh treatment.
        • The manifestation of love and righteousness should be in accordance with the timing, the situation, and the individual's nature.
        • For some individuals, punishment may be necessary, for others, a mere warning, and for some, forgiveness is appropriate.

Proverb 03 Pathway to Life, Health & Riches

      Introduction

To fully appreciate Proverb 3, we begin by reflecting on our perspectives about life?

      • Life's Three Perspectives - 人生三观

        • Worldview - 世界观/宇宙观

        • Life Perspective - 人生观

        • Value System - 价值观

      • What are the differences we have with others? 什么是 三观不同
