The Weight Good Things Were Never Meant to Carry
A Short Devotion on Luke 10:38–42
Opening Verse
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
— Luke 10:41–42
Reflection
Martha was doing a good thing—serving Jesus. But somewhere along the way, the good thing became the main thing. Her service replaced her Savior. Her busyness crowded out His presence.
The result? Anxiety, resentment, and distance from Christ.
This is what happens when we push good gifts into the center of our lives—where only God belongs:
Children become idols instead of gifts.
Marriage bears the weight of saving us, instead of pointing us to Christ.
Ministry becomes our identity, instead of flowing from intimacy.
Career and health become our security, instead of God's faithfulness.
These things were never meant to carry the ultimate weight of our souls. Only Christ can.
The Vicious Cycle
When Christ is no longer at the center, we spiral:
Loss of desire for Him
Good things pushed to the center
Overwhelming anxiety and pressure
Complaining against God and judging others
Drifting further from Him
The Remedy
Mary chose the one thing that cannot be taken away: Jesus Himself.
Not because she did nothing—but because she put Him first. She sat at His feet. She listened. She anchored her soul in Him.
And that choice—that relationship—is eternally secure.
Health may fail. Careers may shift. Relationships may change.
But the soul rooted in Christ stands firm.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for placing good things where only You belong. I return my family, my work, my dreams, and my service to their proper place—around You, not in place of You. Help me choose the one thing that cannot be taken away: Your presence. Anchor my heart in You today. Amen.
Takeaway
When Christ is at the center, everything else falls into place.
When Christ is displaced, everything falls apart.
Choose the good portion.
