Why Success Requires Even Greater Humility - Gideon ; Judges 6–8

Key Points of Sermon Preached on 24 Oct 2026 CityLight Community Church

Sermon Title: Gideon: Why Success Requires Even Greater Humility

Scripture Reference: Judges 6–8

Speaker: Rev. John Liu

Core Message & Introduction

  • The Test of Success: Many people are prepared to rely on God during trials and failures, but few are prepared for the temptations and spiritual tests that follow victory and success.
  • Failure vs. Success: Failure often drives us closer to God in prayer and reliance, whereas success can tempt us to trust in our own abilities and strength.

Key Point 1: God Breaks Our Self-Confidence to Build Genuine Faith

  • Gideon's Humble Beginning: When God called Gideon, he was afraid, insecure, and hiding in a winepress while threshing wheat. He viewed himself as coming from the weakest clan and being the least in his family.
  • Patient Faith-Building: God did not reprimand Gideon's fear or his need for signs; instead, God patiently strengthened his faith step-by-step.
  • Reducing the Army (32,000 to 300): God reduced Gideon's army from 32,000 down to just 300 men so Israel would not boast in their own human strength. True victory comes from relying on God alone.
  • Life Application: When resources are scarce (e.g., starting a business or ministry), we pray fervently and experience God deeply. When resources become abundant, we tend to rely less on prayer. God limits our resources not to hinder us, but to deepen our dependence on Him.

Key Point 2: The Greatest Danger After Success Is Taking God’s Glory

  • The People's Temptation: After Gideon defeated the Midianites with 300 men, the Israelites wanted to make him king and set up a hereditary dynasty.
  • Gideon’s Right Words: Gideon responded humbly by declaring: "I will not rule over you, nor will my son... The Lord will rule over you." (Judges 8:23).
  • Words vs. Actions: Despite his humble words, Gideon’s actions drifted. He collected gold ear rings from the plunder and made a golden Ephod (a priestly garment).
  • The Trap of Success: The ephod became a trap—the Israelites eventually began worshipping it, turning a symbol meant to memorialize God's victory into an idol.
  • Life Application: Our past successes, accomplishments, or spiritual gifts can subtly become "ephods"—substitutes for genuine worship that elevate human prestige over God's glory.

Conclusion

True success and victory require constant humility and total dependence on God, both before the battle and especially after the victory.

🌌 The Silent Symphony - Psalm 19:1–4

🌌The Silent Symphony

Psalm 19:1–4
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. … They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth.” — Psalm 19:1,3–4
✨ Reflection

Look up. The heavens declare and proclaim—a bold, continuous announcement. 🌠 Every galaxy is a brushstroke signed by the Artist. But the paradox: no speech, no words—yet the message goes to all the earth. 🌍

“Where is your God? Let him speak!” — The psalm answers: He already has. The silent heavens leave every skeptic without excuse (📖 Romans 1:20).
🔬 “You can’t see it” is no argument. A virus is invisible to the naked eye—yet real, and it takes a super-microscope to see it. The heavens are God’s super-microscope: just because you haven’t looked doesn’t mean the evidence isn’t there. 👁️‍🗨️
🔍 A Remarkable Parallel

Confucius asked: “Does Heaven speak? The four seasons pursue their courses … but does Heaven say anything?” (📜 Analects 17:19). Both texts make the same move: the silent regularity of nature is itself a declaration. The difference? The psalm points to a personal Creator who is due glory; Confucius points to the Dao as a model for life. But on the core claim—heaven declares without speaking—there is no difference. 🤝

🌿 Application

Pause. Step outside. Look up.

  • ⛈️ Storm → His strength
  • 🌸 Flower → His care
  • 🌃 Night sky → His infinity & your place in His story

Let creation do its job.

When someone asks, “Where is your God?” — the answer has been shining above them all along. 🌟

🙏 Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive us for not looking up. Open our eyes to Your handiwork, silence our doubts, and draw us into deeper worship. Let the silent symphony of the heavens tune our hearts to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 💙

✨ The Courage of a Committed Heart - RUTH 1:16 📖

✨ The Courage of a Committed HeartRUTH 1:16

❝
Ruth 1:16 (NIV) — “But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.’”

🕊️A Covenant, Not a Sentiment
Ruth’s declaration is one of the most powerful statements of commitment in Scripture. It is radical, costly, and deliberate — not a poetic feeling but a covenant. She binds her life to Naomi’s and, more profoundly, to the God of Israel. This is the language of conversion — leaving behind idols to cling to the Lord.
💔 What Ruth left behindHomeland · family · culture & gods of Moab · security (a widow’s future was precarious)
🌟 What Ruth embracedA future with no guarantees · uncertainty · a new identity · a new faith
What makes it striking is its context. Naomi is not a cheerful mentor — she is a broken, bitter woman who calls herself “Mara” because “the Almighty has made my life very bitter” (Ruth 1:20). Ruth follows a grieving widow into an unknown future. Her devotion is a decision of the will: “I don’t know what lies ahead, but I know who I am going with.”
🔍The Object of Trust Must Be Real — Evidence Ruth Had Seen
Ruth’s commitment was not a blind leap. She had accumulated years of evidence, watching Naomi’s life in ordinary moments — in grief, loss, and daily faithfulness:
💞 Selfless loveNaomi released her daughters-in-law, putting their future above her loneliness (Ruth 1:8–9). Ruth saw unselfish, other-centered love — evidence of a real God at work.
💬 Raw honestyNaomi named her bitterness (1:20–21). No performance — just authentic faith, battered but alive.
🙏 Faith that survivesNaomi still spoke of “the Almighty.” Ruth witnessed a faith that could endure the worst life throws at it.
⚠️ Principle: The object of your trust must be verified by evidence. Not every “Naomi” is trustworthy. Jesus warned of wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matt 7:15–20); Paul commended the Bereans for testing teaching against Scripture (Acts 17:11). Ruth’s radical commitment was reasoned, not reckless.
✝️Pointing to the Gospel
Ruth, a Moabite outsider, is grafted into the people of God — becoming great-grandmother of King David and, ultimately, an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Her radical commitment to a human companion foreshadows the radical commitment Christ calls us to: to leave behind everything for the sake of following Him.
📝Application
  • Examine your commitments. Ruth’s devotion was costly. Are there relationships or commitments you will see through even when it is hard? Where is God calling you to “cling” rather than “turn back”?
  • Consider the cost of following God. Following Jesus often means leaving behind old ways, old identities, old securities. Ruth models wholehearted, no-strings-attached surrender. What might you need to leave behind?
  • Trust God in uncertainty. Ruth did not know what would happen in Bethlehem — she simply knew she was going with Naomi and with God. Where is God asking you to step out in faith when you cannot see the whole path?
🙏
Lord God, thank You for the example of Ruth — a woman who chose commitment over comfort and faith over familiarity. Give us hearts willing to follow You wherever You lead, even when the path is uncertain. Help us to cling to You and to the people You place in our lives with a devotion that reflects Your own covenant love. We ask in the name of Jesus, who left everything to come and redeem us. Amen.
💡
Key Takeaway: Ruth’s devotion was not based on what she could see but on whom she had chosen to follow — verified by real evidence. True commitment says, “Where you go, I will go” — and trusts God with the rest of the story.

🌍 The Earth Is the Lord's — And All Belong to Him - Psalm 24:1

🌍 The Earth Is the Lord's — And All Belong to Him

Psalm 24:1

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

— We are not owners; we receive and we steward 🙏

💡 Opening Thought

We say "my home, my time, my family" — but God gently rewrites our hearts. Nothing is truly ours. All is His, entrusted to us to cherish, manage, and love. This is not loss — it is freedom, purpose, and peace.

✨ 1. He Is Lord Over Every Part of Your Life

Mountains, moments, meals, talents, relationships — all bear His name. You carry no burden of "owning" it all; the Creator and Sustainer is already at work in His world, including your world.

🤝 2. Family: His Gift, Your Stewardship

Your loved ones belong first to God — He has given them to you to love, guide, protect, and pray for. You are responsible to care deeply; you are not called to be their saviour. You cannot control their choices or carry their worries — only He holds their hearts securely.

🛡️ 3. His Supply for Your Every Need

Since all resources belong to Him — finances, strength, wisdom, patience — what you need to care for yourself and your family flows from His storehouse. When stretched thin, ask: "How would the Owner have me use what He provides?"

🤍 4. Love Fully, Hold Loosely

Love with open hands — give generously, serve faithfully, then place what matters most back into His keeping. He loves your family far more than you do. In gain or loss, His hand holds all things well.

🙏 Prayer

Gracious Lord, I confess I have often lived as though I owned what is Yours — my time, my resources, my loved ones. Forgive me. I surrender today: be Lord of my hands, my heart, my home, and my future. Thank You for entrusting my family to me. Grant me patience, wisdom, and strength to love them well. I place them into Your faithful hands — they are Yours, and I trust You fully. In Jesus' name, Amen.

💜 Cast all your anxiety on Him — He cares for you and them.
1 Peter 5:7

✨ Seen · Treasured · Secure ✨ Hebrews 6:10

✨ Seen · Treasured · Secure ✨

Hebrews 6:10 NIV
"God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them."

💛 He Sees — Even When No One Else Does
Served in silence? Gave without thanks? Loved unnoticed? God does not overlook — He is not unjust to miss what is done in love. He sees what you do and the love behind it.

👁️ Not for Show — But for Him
If you help to be seen, it is recognition-seeking, not true service. Applause fades fast — but God looks at the heart. (Matthew 6:1)

🤝 Love Shines in Quiet Faithfulness
Your love for God shows in unnoticed kindness: the extra care, the anonymous gift, patience when tired. "Whatever you did for the least… you did for Me." (Matthew 25:40)

🏆 God’s Eternal Reward
✅ He remembers your labor forever — Hebrews 6:10
✅ "Well done, good and faithful servant"
✅ Peace, joy, growing Christ-likeness now
✅ Full inheritance & eternal life in His kingdom
✅ Himself — His approval is your greatest prize

🙏 Faithful Father, forgive me when I seek the spotlight instead of Your presence. Help me love in silence, serving not for praise but because You see. Every quiet act is for You — Your approval is reward enough. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

💚 Your faithful service in love is eternally held in His heart 💚

🕊️ The Weaver’s Promise 🕊️— Romans 8:28

🕊️The Weaver’s Promise🕊️
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
— Romans 8:28 (NIV)
📖 What It Means
This is one of Scripture’s most treasured promises—but notice what it does not say: it doesn’t say all things are good. Pain, loss, and suffering remain real. What it does say is that God takes every thing—joys and tears, triumphs and tragedies—and weaves them together for your ultimate good. The promise has two markers:
❤️those who love Him
🎯called according to His purpose
His call creates our love; His purpose anchors our hope. “Good” isn’t necessarily what we think is best—it’s what makes us more like Jesus (Romans 8:29). Think of Joseph: his brothers meant it for evil, but God turned it to life-saving good (Genesis 50:20). The same God is at work in your story.
💬 Reflection
  • 🔹We know — not wishful thinking, but confident assurance rooted in God’s character.
  • 🔹In all things — nothing is excluded. Not your confusion, delay, or heartbreak. God is there, weaving.
  • 🔹For our good — His good includes your growth, holiness, and eternal joy in Christ.
⏳“Life is understood backwards, but must be lived forward.” — H.B. Charles Jr.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are never passive. Even when I cannot see the way, I trust You are working in every part of my life for my good and Your glory. When things don’t make sense, remind me: You are faithful, and Your plan is perfect. In Jesus’ name, amen. ❤️
✨Takeaway: God hasn’t promised we’ll understand everything now, but He has promised that everything is working toward a beautiful finish line. Trust the Weaver—He knows what He’s doing. 🙌
