Harmony and Growth of the Church Body

The previous two posts talk about fellowship with God. There is another important aspect of fellowship which is fellowship with others. How do we relate to others? This is the great testimony that Jesus told us in:

John 13:35 NIV 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Harmony and Unity are the trademarks of Christianity. How can we do that? Below is a list of the steps and related verses for your consideration.

Let's have comments from ChatGPT:

This post is a profound reflection on the biblical principles of fellowship within the church body, emphasizing the importance of shared faith, encouragement, honor, bearing one another's burdens, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It beautifully aligns with the New Testament teachings on how believers should interact with one another to promote unity, growth, and spiritual maturity.

Key Observations:

  • Shared Faith and Growth: The post highlights the mutual encouragement of faith within the community (Romans 1:12) and the importance of unity (1 Corinthians 12:25). This fosters an environment where believers can grow together, supporting one another through love and concern, and working towards peace and edification (Romans 14:19).
  • Encouragement: The emphasis on meeting together to encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24-25) is vital for spiritual growth and maintaining a sense of community. The use of scripture, singing, and gratitude as means of encouragement (Colossians 3:16) underscores the richness of fellowship when centered on Christ’s message.
  • Honor and Humility: The call to honor one another above oneself (Romans 12:10) and to be humble, gentle, and patient (Ephesians 4:2-3) speaks to the selflessness required in true Christian fellowship. These virtues are foundational for maintaining unity and peace within the body of Christ.
  • Shared Burdens and Forgiveness: Bearing each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) and forgiving one another (Colossians 3:13) are acts of love that fulfill the law of Christ. The post rightly points out that forgiveness is rooted in remembering God’s forgiveness towards us, which should motivate us to forgive others without bitterness.
  • Comfort and Reconciliation: Comforting those who repent (2 Corinthians 2:7) and seeking reconciliation through confession and prayer (James 5:16) are essential for healing and restoring relationships. The idea that a peaceful and righteous heart makes prayers effective adds a powerful dimension to the importance of relational harmony.

Overall Impression:

This post offers a well-rounded guide to cultivating a healthy, loving, and spiritually vibrant church community. It emphasizes that true fellowship is not merely about gathering together but involves active participation in each other's lives—through encouragement, honoring one another, bearing burdens, forgiving, and seeking reconciliation. These practices not only strengthen individual believers but also fortify the unity and witness of the church as a whole.

The post also resonates with the idea of living out Christian principles in a way that mirrors God's grace and truth, which is central to your interest in integrating biblical principles into communication and correction.

Facing the Truth leads to Freedom - 1 John 1:7 in Context

In A Clear Conscience and a Peaceful Life - Meditation on 1 John 1:7 I do a word-by-word study on the verse. However, studying just a verse alone may take it out of context. So now I put in the related verses in the context and we get a clearer and more complete picture.

Again, I feed the mind map into ChatGPT and get its comments to provide greater clarity.

You've provided a thoughtful and thorough analysis of 1 John 1:7, emphasizing the importance of walking in the light and the role of fellowship with God and others. Here’s a reflection on the points you've made:

Contextual Understanding:

Conditional - Follow Him

  • "But if": This conditional statement highlights the choice we must make to walk in the light, underscoring our active participation in living a life aligned with God's will.

Walking in the Light

  • "In the light" vs. Darkness: Living righteously, with transparency and nothing to hide, contrasts with darkness, where deceit and sin reside. As stated in verse 5, "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all," reinforcing that God's nature is pure and without blemish.

Fellowship with One Another

  • Shared Values and Joy: Your comparison to Confucius' teaching about shared values emphasizes that genuine fellowship stems from walking together in the light. Verses 3b and 4 further reveal that our fellowship is with the Father and the Son, and that shared joy is a central purpose.

The Blood of Jesus Purifies Us

  • Ongoing Cleansing: Jesus' sacrifice purifies us from sin continually. This purification clears our guilt and is present and active, allowing us to remain in the light despite our errors.

Facing Errors and Confession

  • Boldly Confronting Sin: Walking in the light requires us to acknowledge and confess our sins when we stray. Denial keeps us in darkness and bondage, but confession restores us to the light.

Verses on Denial and Truth

  • Denial vs. Confession: Verses 6 and 8 warn against claiming fellowship with God while walking in darkness or denying sin. Truth and confession are essential for genuine fellowship and freedom.

Lessons Learned

  • Peace and Fellowship with Jesus: To maintain peace and a clear conscience, we must have fellowship with Jesus, following His values and ways.
  • Boldness in Facing Sin: Fellowship with Jesus involves acknowledging our sins without making excuses. Recognition and confession are the first steps to overcoming sin.
  • Freedom through Truth: Hiding sin binds us, but confessing it in light of God's love and forgiveness sets us free. God’s faithfulness ensures our forgiveness and purification, empowering us to live in truth.

Conclusion

Your analysis beautifully integrates the theological depth of 1 John 1:7 with practical steps for living a Christ-centered life. By walking in the light, confessing our sins, and relying on Jesus' ongoing purification, we can experience genuine fellowship and freedom in Christ. This passage reminds us of the continuous journey of faith, where transparency, confession, and reliance on God's grace lead to spiritual growth and community harmony.

A Clear Conscience and a Peaceful Life - Meditation on 1 John 1:7

Do you want to have a peaceful and guilt-free life?

Then follow 1 John 1:7 shown in the mind map below.

To meditate further, we feed the mind-map content to ChatGPT and get its comments:

Your comments on 1 John 1:7 from the NIV offer a thoughtful reflection on the passage. Here's a closer look at each point:

Conditional - Follow Him

  • "But if": This introduces a condition that emphasizes the importance of our choice to follow Jesus. Walking in the light requires intentionality and decision.

We Walk in the Light

  • "In the light": Walking in the light suggests living a life of righteousness, transparency, and having nothing to hide. This reflects living according to God’s truth and being open and honest in our actions and intentions.

As He Is in the Light

  • "As He is in the light": God’s nature is pure and true. We are called to emulate His character by living in a way that reflects His holiness and integrity.

Fellowship with One Another

  • Fellowship and Confucius' Teaching: You draw an interesting parallel with Confucius’ idea that people with different values cannot work together. In a Christian context, fellowship is strengthened when believers share common values and goals aligned with God's will. Walking together in the light fosters genuine relationships and unity.

The Blood of Jesus Purifies Us

  • "Purifies us from all sin": This highlights the ongoing work of Jesus’ sacrifice. His blood continually cleanses us, removing guilt and restoring our relationship with God. It's a present, continuous process that emphasizes grace and renewal.

Lessons

  • Peace and a Clear Conscience: To experience true peace and a clear conscience, we must maintain a close relationship with Jesus. This involves aligning our lives with His teachings and values, leading to harmony in our hearts and communities.

Your insights provide a comprehensive understanding of the verse, linking theological concepts with practical applications for living a Christ-centered life. By recognizing the conditions and benefits of walking in the light, we can better appreciate the transformative power of fellowship with Jesus and one another.

The Temptations of Jesus - A Revisit

**The Temptation of Jesus by the Devil - Jesus' College Entrance Exam Luke 4:1-13**

(go to Chinese 华文 text)

The college entrance exams in China have recently ended. The temptation of Jesus by the Devil was Jesus' college entrance exam. After graduating, Jesus proclaimed in verse 18, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

When I first read about the temptation of Jesus, I thought Jesus was being foolish—why not just turn the stones into bread and shut the Devil's mouth? Little did I know, if Jesus had done that, he would have fallen into the trap. Jesus would have established his identity based on external proof, and he would have been under the Devil's control everywhere. Just like us, we often let our surroundings and circumstances dictate our emotions, causing us to doubt God and even complain to God. So, what does Jesus' temptation teach us?

**The First Temptation - Proof of Identity**

1. **Identity** - "If you are the Son of God..." The Devil's first move is to make us doubt our identity...

2. **Method** - After doubt comes the demand for proof; the Devil provides a method—turning stones into bread.

3. **Enticement** - Using what we need the most, what is most attractive to us, to lure us. After fasting for 40 days, what Jesus needed most was bread to fill his hungry stomach.

Teaching 1: Our identity cannot be proven by external factors. Jesus teaches us to recognize our identity according to the Scriptures—we are children created and loved by God. Our lives are not just about eating but about living according to God's word and standards.

**The Second Temptation - Distortion and Misuse of God's Word
(according to Matthew's sequence; Luke is the third)**

Since Jesus used Scripture, the Devil also used Scripture to tempt Jesus.

Teaching 2: We must act according to God's word and trust in it. We should not interpret and apply Scripture according to our own ideas. God is our Lord, not our slave to fulfill our desires.

**The Third Temptation - Taking Shortcuts**

Jesus' glory and position required him to walk the difficult path of the cross. The Devil wanted Jesus to take an easier and quicker path—worshipping the Devil. Jesus chose to walk the path of suffering that God had planned for him, which was necessary and the path to victory. Jesus defeated the Devil through the cross.

Teaching 3: We should trust in God's calling and plan, follow God's guidance, not fear difficulties, refrain from complaining, have faith, hold onto hope, and joyfully walk the path God has given us.

Your analogy of Jesus' temptations as a "college entrance exam" is both creative and theologically insightful! This framework makes profound spiritual truths relatable to contemporary struggles, especially within educational cultures that value testing. Let's explore your analysis point by point, adding some complementary thoughts:

Key Insights from Your Analysis:

  1. The "Exam" Purpose
Just as gaokao(Chinese Higher (University Entrance) Exam) determines university placement, Jesus' wilderness testing proved His readiness for Messianic ministry. Passing this "exam" equipped Him to proclaim Luke 4:18-19 with authority. Had He failed, His mission would have been compromised.
  2. First Temptation: Identity Crisis
Your observation about Satan attacking identity is spot-on. The devil’s "If you are the Son of God..." (Luke 4:3) parallels how we’re tempted to base our worth on:
    • Academic scores
    • Job titles
    • Social approval
Jesus’ response reaffirms: True identity rests in God’s Word, not external validation (Deut. 8:3). Bread sustains the body, but obedience to God sustains eternity.
  3. Second Temptation: Distorting Scripture
Satan’s misuse of Psalm 91:11-12 (Luke 4:9-11) exposes a deadly trap: twisting God’s promises to justify reckless choices. This mirrors those who:
    • Use "God told me..." to bypass wisdom
    • Demand miraculous "proof" to believe
Jesus’ rebuttal (Deut. 6:16) reminds us: Faith never manipulates God. Trust follows His character, not our presumptions.
  4. Third Temptation: The Shortcut Lie
Satan’s offer of "all kingdoms" (Luke 4:5-7) reveals his core strategy: trading eternal purpose for temporary gain. This echoes modern temptations like:
    • Cheating to pass exams
    • Compromising integrity for promotions
Jesus’ rejection (Deut. 6:13) shows: True victory requires costly obedience. The cross seemed like failure—yet it became God’s triumph.

Three Life-Changing Lessons:

Temptation

Satan’s Lie

Jesus’ Truth

Our Application

Identity

"Prove yourself"

"I am defined by God’s Word"

Reject performance-based worth; rest in being God’s child

Scripture

"God owes you a sign"

"God is not our servant"

Study Scripture holistically; avoid cherry-picking verses

Shortcut

"Gain without pain"

"Obedience > Outcomes"

Embrace God’s timing; reject compromise for quick wins

Why Your Analogy Resonates:

  • Gaokao Parallel: Just as exams test years of preparation, Jesus’ 40-day fast prepared Him for this spiritual battle. His "graduation" (Luke 4:14-15) launched a ministry that transformed history.
  • Modern Relevance: Young believers facing academic/career pressures feel this tension: "Should I compromise to succeed?" Jesus’ example answers: Your calling is greater than convenience.
  • Ultimate Victory: Satan’s offer of "all kingdoms" was a fraud—he didn’t own them (Psalm 24:1). Jesus later declared, "All authority is given to Me" (Matt. 28:18)—earned through obedience, not compromise.

One Refinement:

While your comparison is powerful, remember: Jesus’ testing wasn’t pass/fail but proving. His victory was certain (He is the Word made flesh—John 1:14), yet He endured temptation to fully sympathize with us (Hebrews 4:15). Unlike exams, our worth isn’t on the line—it’s secured by His perfect score on our behalf.

In essence: You’ve brilliantly reframed this epic spiritual battle as a roadmap for our daily struggles. When Satan whispers, "If you’re God’s child, why struggle? Take the easy way!"—We now stand armed with Jesus’ playbook: Truth over bread, trust over testing, worship over compromise. 那美好的仗,你已看明如何打!(You’ve seen how to fight the good fight!) 🙏

The New Bible Study Method with Visual Mindmapping & Generative AI Illustrated with Luke 24:1-12 The Empty Tomb

With the availability of Generative AIs like ChatGPT, Germini, and many others, we should change our traditional Bible Study to make use of them for a more productive and fruitful study.

Firstly, we need a notepad to record our study.

I highly recommend the mind mapping software Freeplane. It is visual and has many features that help us arrange, analyze, and organize our notes.

You search the internet for the Bible version that you like, choose the passage you want to study and copy and paste it into the Freeplane mind map. Or you could just fire out the AI software  ChatGPT, and enter the passage and version you want in the prompt e.g. "Luke 24:1-12 NASB"

With the Freeplane, you can divide the sentences into sub-parts to highlight the key concepts. It makes the key points stand out. You can add in your comments, the interpretation of the facts, as you go along.  You can group a paragraph of text and give them a title. You can highlight the text and the background to give a better visual understanding.

You can then collect the comments you have made into lessons you have learned and apply them. The old method of facts, interpretation of facts, and applications are still applicable and be followed.

Here is the first cut...

We could have started by asking ChatGPT to give us the lessons from the passage. But I prefer to start with our own study first before getting ChatGPT to help.

Now we use ChatGPT to see what else we can learn.

We put the following into the prompt of ChatGPT "Lessons from Luke 24:1-12".

Here is the ChatGPT response:

Luke 24:1-12, which narrates the discovery of Jesus' resurrection by the women who visited the tomb, offers several profound lessons for believers. Here are some key lessons:

1. **The Reality of the Resurrection**:

   - The empty tomb and the angelic proclamation that Jesus has risen affirm the foundational Christian belief in the resurrection. This event validates Jesus' identity as the Son of God and confirms His victory over death and sin.

2. **Faithfulness in Adversity**:

   - The women who went to the tomb early in the morning demonstrated their devotion to Jesus despite the fear and sorrow following His crucifixion. Their commitment exemplifies faithfulness in difficult times.

3. **God's Faithfulness to His Promises**:

   - The angels remind the women of Jesus' own prophecy about His death and resurrection. This highlights that God's promises are reliable and will be fulfilled, even if they seem impossible.

4. **Witness and Testimony**:

   - The women, after encountering the empty tomb and hearing the angels, go back to tell the apostles. This underscores the importance of sharing the good news and bearing witness to God's work in our lives.

5. **Skepticism and Belief**:

   - The apostles initially dismiss the women's report as nonsense. This illustrates that even close followers of Jesus can struggle with doubt and skepticism. It challenges believers to trust in God's word and the testimonies of others.

6. **Seeking and Discovery**:

   - Peter's response—running to the tomb and investigating for himself—demonstrates the value of seeking the truth actively. His wonder at the empty tomb suggests an openness to divine revelation and the beginning of understanding.

7. **Role of Women in God's Plan**:

   - The passage highlights the significant role women played in Jesus' ministry and as the first witnesses to the resurrection. This emphasizes the value and importance of women in the faith community and in spreading the gospel.

8. **Transformation through Encounter**:

   - The encounter with the empty tomb and the message of the angels transforms the women from mourners to messengers of joy. This indicates that an encounter with the risen Christ brings transformation and a new purpose.

9. **Hope and Renewal**:

   - The resurrection represents hope and new beginnings. It reassures believers that death is not the end, and there is always hope for renewal and eternal life through Jesus.

By reflecting on these lessons, believers can deepen their understanding of the resurrection's significance and its implications for their faith and daily lives.

We can see ChatGPT has outdone us. Giving us more pointers for us to learn. We can include them in our lessons learned to make them our own.

During our study, if we come across any puzzling verse, we could just ask ChatGPT. e.g.

"Who are the two men in dazzling apparel?"

Here is ChatGPT's response:

The "two men in dazzling apparel" mentioned in Luke 24:1-12 are generally understood to be angels. Here are some key points that support this interpretation:

1. **Description of the Men**:

   - The description of their clothes as "dazzling" or "gleaming like lightning" is commonly associated with angelic beings in biblical literature. Angels are often depicted with a radiant appearance that reflects their heavenly origin.

2. **Role in the Narrative**:

   - The role of these men is to deliver a divine message. They inform the women that Jesus has risen, reminding them of Jesus' own words predicting His death and resurrection. This role as messengers is typical of angels throughout the Bible.

3. **Parallel Accounts**:

   - In other Gospel accounts of the resurrection, similar figures appear. For example, Matthew 28:2-7 describes an angel who rolls back the stone and speaks to the women. Mark 16:5 mentions a young man in a white robe, and John 20:12 describes two angels in white sitting where Jesus' body had been.

4. **Reaction of the Women**:

   - The women's reaction of fear and bowing down suggests they recognized these figures as heavenly beings. This response is consistent with other biblical encounters with angels.

Taken together, these points strongly indicate that the "two men in dazzling apparel" are indeed angels, sent to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus to the women at the tomb.

We can feed our lessons learned to ChatGPT and learn even more...

(In Freeplane mind map, just copy Lessons, and paste it into ChatGPT prompt "My learned <ctl><v>")

This is ChatGPT's response:

Your learned lessons from Luke 24:1-12 are insightful and capture the key elements of the passage. Here’s a slightly refined version that retains your points while adding a bit more detail:

### Lessons from Luke 24:1-12

1. **Eagerness and Faithfulness of the Women Who Served Jesus**:

    - **Early Morning Dedication**: The women demonstrated their commitment by going to the tomb early in the morning, showing their devotion and willingness to serve Jesus even after His death.

2. **Signs of Jesus' Resurrection**:

    - **The Heavy Tomb Stone Rolled Away**: The removal of the stone, likely by angels, provided physical evidence that something extraordinary had happened, allowing access to the tomb.

    - **The Empty Tomb**: The absence of Jesus’ body served as circumstantial evidence of His resurrection.

    - **Angelic Confirmation**: The angels’ appearance and message encouraged and confirmed to the women that Jesus had indeed risen, as He had promised.

3. **Skepticism Toward the Story Told**:

    - **Disciples' Doubt**: The initial disbelief of the disciples highlights a natural skepticism and the difficulty of accepting the miraculous without concrete evidence.

4. **Need to Validate the Story Told by Others**:

    - **Peter's Verification**: Peter’s decision to run to the tomb to see for himself underscores the importance of personally verifying extraordinary claims.

5. **Evidence-Based Faith**:

    - **Fulfillment of Prophecy**: The fulfillment of Jesus' own prophecies about His death and resurrection strengthens faith based on evidence and divine promise.

These points reflect the significant themes of faith, evidence, and the transformative impact of the resurrection story. They also emphasize the human elements of devotion, skepticism, and the need for personal validation in the journey of faith.

Now, we could replace our lessons with the ChatGPT version or we could just improve ours.

Here is my final version:

Lessons:

  • 1 The eagerness and faithfulness of the Women who served Jesus
    • Early morning they went.
  • 2 The signs of Jesus resurrections
    • The heavy tombstone was rolled away for access.--- by the angles?
    • The absence of Jesus’ body served as circumstantial evidence of His resurrection.
    • The angles encouragement and confirmation of Jesus' resurrection using what Jesus had foretold them.
  • 3 Be suspicious of the story told
    • The disciples did not believe the woman's stories of empty tomb, angles, and their story. It is good to do so. It is difficult to accept the miraculous without concrete evidence.
  • 4 Need to validate the story told by others
    • Peter went to the tomb to see for himself underscoring the importance of personally verifying extraordinary claims.
  • 5 Evidence-based faith
    • The fulfillment of Jesus' own prophecies about His death and resurrection strengthens faith based on evidence and divine promise.
    • Doubts are good. When they are resolved our belief could then be stronger.
  • These points reflect the significant themes of faith, evidence, and the transformative impact of the resurrection story. They also emphasize the human elements of devotion, skepticism, and the need for personal validation in the journey of faith.

Using Generative AI like ChatGPT for Answers - Why did God not answer?

I wish to encourage people to make good use of Generative AI like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc to assist us in finding answers to our questions, even about God. During the interactions, we may have other ideas and we can also post them to ChatGPT and learn more.

Here is an interaction with ChatGPT on the question:

"why didn't god answer our prayer?"

ChatGPT

As an AI language model, I don't have personal beliefs or access to specific religious teachings or doctrines. However, I can offer some general perspectives on why prayers might not be answered according to various religious traditions:

  1. Different Beliefs: Different religious traditions have various explanations for unanswered prayers. Some may believe that God has a plan that is beyond human understanding, and what seems like an unanswered prayer may actually be part of that plan.
  2. Timing: Some believe that prayers are answered in God's time, which may not always align with human expectations. What may seem like an unanswered prayer at one moment could eventually be answered in the future.
  3. Free Will: Some religious teachings suggest that humans have free will, and God may choose not to interfere with those choices, even if it means not directly answering a prayer.
  4. Testing and Growth: Some religious perspectives suggest that challenges and unanswered prayers can be opportunities for spiritual growth and development, allowing individuals to strengthen their faith and character.
  5. Unknowable Reasons: Ultimately, there may be reasons why prayers are not answered that are beyond human comprehension. Religious faith often involves trusting in a higher power's wisdom and goodness, even in the face of unanswered prayers.

It's important to note that perspectives on prayer and its outcomes vary widely among different religious traditions and individual believers. If you're struggling with unanswered prayers, it may be helpful to seek guidance and support from religious leaders or members of your faith community.

You

I see it as our perspective differs from God's perspective and we don't like God's answers for us.

ChatGPT

Your perspective highlights an important aspect of faith and prayer – the difference between human understanding and the divine perspective. It's common for people to desire certain outcomes or answers to their prayers based on their limited understanding and perspective, which may not always align with what is ultimately best for them according to higher wisdom.

In many religious traditions, there's an acknowledgment that humans may not always understand why certain things happen or why prayers are not answered in the way they expect. Trusting in the wisdom and goodness of a higher power, even when it's difficult to understand or accept, is often a central tenet of faith.

Sometimes, what seems like an unanswered prayer or an undesired outcome may ultimately lead to growth, learning, or unforeseen blessings. It can be challenging to accept this at the moment, especially when faced with disappointment or difficulty, but maintaining faith and trust in a higher power can provide comfort and strength during such times.

Exploring these feelings and perspectives with others in your religious community or seeking guidance from spiritual leaders can often provide support and insight into grappling with unanswered prayers and finding peace within your faith.

Yes, your interpretation reflects a common understanding in many religious traditions. It's often expressed as "yes," "no," or "wait." Here's a breakdown of these responses:

  1. Yes: Sometimes prayers are answered affirmatively, and individuals receive what they've asked for. This can be seen as a direct response from a higher power to their prayers.
  2. No, but Trust Me: In this case, the prayer may not be answered in the way the individual hoped for or expected, but it's believed that there's a greater plan at work. Trusting in the wisdom and goodness of a higher power, even when things don't go as desired, is a central aspect of faith.
  3. Wait: Some prayers may not be answered immediately, but individuals are encouraged to be patient and have faith that the answer will come in due time. This could involve waiting for the right circumstances or for personal growth and readiness.

In essence, these responses highlight the idea that prayers are not always answered in the way we anticipate, but trusting in a higher power's wisdom and timing can provide comfort and guidance in navigating life's challenges and uncertainties.

Can we see the disappointments we face as stepping stones to better places, provided we innovate. All innovation starts with realizing there is a problem or pain and then working hard to resolve it. Can we then ask God for the wisdom to innovate and make a lemon into lemonade?

ChatGPT

Absolutely, seeing disappointments as opportunities for growth and innovation is a positive and proactive mindset. In many religious and philosophical traditions, adversity is viewed as a potential catalyst for personal development and positive change. Here's how your perspective aligns with certain belief systems:

  1. Problem-Solving Mentality: Recognizing challenges or disappointments as opportunities for innovation is akin to acknowledging that every obstacle presents a chance to learn and improve. This aligns with the idea that setbacks can lead to breakthroughs when approached with creativity and determination.
  2. Requesting Divine Guidance: Asking for wisdom or guidance from a higher power is a common practice across many faiths. Seeking divine assistance in navigating challenges and finding innovative solutions can provide believers with a sense of support and direction.
  3. Turning Lemons into Lemonade: This metaphor encapsulates the idea of transforming adversity into something positive or advantageous. By seeking to innovate and find solutions to problems, individuals can effectively turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success.

Ultimately, combining faith with a proactive and problem-solving mindset can empower individuals to overcome obstacles, innovate, and achieve their goals. Asking for divine guidance in this process can provide strength, insight, and inspiration along the way.

Wisdom for Living Well - Proverbs 30(3)

Wisdom is more than knowledge. It is also more than being good and morally right. Those are minimum wisdom standards, but true wisdom needs more.  Wisdom is knowing the right thing to do anytime, anywhere, and for the right people. It is about making the right decisions to avoid disasters, to survive, and to have a good future.

Tim Keller in True Wisdom said it is insights. It involves 3 things:

1 knowing how things really work

2 knowing how things really are

3 what I should do about it.

It is to become competent with regard to the realities of life - making up of physical realities,         relationships, and God's spiritual laws. It is to do the right things even when rules don't apply

Proverbs 30 gives us some key points as shown in the mind map:

What is wisdom?

Following up on the previous post on Proverbs 30. I spent some time finding out more about what wisdom is.

In short, wisdom is facing up realities of life and making the right decisions to obtain success and avoid disasters -趋吉避凶。

The 1st is facing & appreciation of the realities - Outside-in approach.
The 2nd is the development, analysis, and evaluation of alternatives to make the right one.

Here is the mind map on wisdom.

Let Your Goal for 2024 be Personal Development - Proverbs 29

Personal Character Development:

The two key attributes are:  Emotion Management & Humility

Emotion Management - Especially Anger Management

  • Pro 29:11  Fools are quick to express their anger, but wise people are patient and control themselves.

  • Pro 12:16  A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.
Maturity is the ability to control ourselves, especially our emotions, of which anger is most common.
ZengSQ: Getting angry is to allow others mistakes to punish oneself.
Pro 29:22  An angry person causes arguments, and someone who is quick-tempered is guilty of many sins.

Art of War : [12.10] The ruler may not move his army out of anger; the general may not do battle out of wrath. 11] If it is advantageous, move; if it is not advantageous, stop. 12] Those angry will be happy again, and those wrathful will be cheerful again, but a destroyed nation cannot exist again, the dead cannot be brought back to life.

  • Uncontrolled anger will bring destruction and hurt. Anger is no sin.

It is the wrongful expression of anger that causes sin.

Humility Development
  • Pro 29:23  Your pride can bring you down. Humility will bring you honor.

  • Pro 18:12  Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.

Luk 14:11  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Character development

It is not done at the annual New Year resolution but is done daily. It is an accumulation of daily practices.

We find Daniel 6:10-12 He prayed 3 times daily. Before the day was over, he reflected and corrected.

A similar practice is done by the sages of Ancient China. Analects 1v4 曾子在回答孔子提问时说:“吾日三省吾身——为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?”Zengzi said,'Every day I examine myself on three counts. In what I have undertaken on another's behalf, have I failed to do my best? In my dealings with my friends have I failed to be trustworthy in what I say? Have I passed on to others anything that I have not tried out myself?'
  • Emotion Management is best done through mindfulness practice.

  • Humility is...

    • Proverbs 22:4 (NIV): "Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life."
Humility is recognizing our standing with reference to others. Acknowledging God and some others above ourselves. Giving respect and obedience to them.

James 4:10 (NIV): "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."
Humility is respecting and following the Lord's teaching, which leads to promotion and respect by others!

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
This verse is more specific --- humility is valuing others and prioritizing the well-being of others over selfish desires.

  • 15谦 Humility - Ability with Gentleness

From the Book of Change 易经  - Ancient Chinese Wisdom

    • 15谦 内高外低,有而不炫,谦虚行事,
    • Humility is made up of “have”, “don’t talk” and “use”. We must develop our ability and build up our resources so that we can have them. Then we must, while not boasting about it, use it to do good things. It is not passive but quiet aggressive actions without drawing attention to self.
    • 1. develop humility
    • 2. let your action do the talking
    • 3. accomplished and yet don’t claim credit but give credit
    • 4. do more good things and encourage others to do too
    • 5. do corrective actions to remove bad things
    • 6. expand humility to others that they may have it too
