Bear One Another’s Burdens

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Gal 6:2

The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry Alone

The Greek word for “burden” — baros — means a crushing weight, a load so heavy it threatens to collapse the one carrying it. It’s not the ordinary daily load. It’s the boulder that pins you down. The crisis. The failure. The grief too deep for words. And Paul says: pick it up and carry it with them.

Two Kinds of Law

Old Law — “Thou shall not”

• Thou shall not murder
• Thou shall not steal
• Thou shall not bear false witness
• Thou shall not covet

 Draws a fence. Restrains evil. Tells you where not to step.

Law of Christ — “Thou shall”

• Thou shallloveone another
• Thou shallbearburdens
• Thou shallforgiveone another
• Thou shallserveone another

 Moves from restraint to action.

The Balance of Verse 5

Verse	Greek	Meaning
6:2	baros	A crushing, overwhelming burden — too heavy to bear alone.
6:5	phortion	A normal load or personal responsibility — one’s own duty.

 Together: Don’t leave someone alone under a crushing weight — help them. But each person is still accountable for their own responsibilities. Opposes both isolation and irresponsibility.

Prayer

Lord, the old law kept me from doing wrong, but Your law calls me to do right. Open my eyes to the crushing burdens around me. Give me the courage to step in, the strength to carry what is not mine, and the humility to let others carry mine. Let me not merely avoid evil — let me actively love. In doing so, may I fulfill the law of Christ. Amen.
