Connecting the Dots
Thanksgiving Is a Choice
David doesn’t start with his problems—he starts with praise. “With all my heart” means the will, mind, and emotions are fully engaged. Gratitude is often a deliberate decision, not just a feeling. We choose to thank God before the emotion catches up.
The Silver Lining in the Dark Cloud
Gratitude is not denial of the darkness—it is the grace to see God’s light within it. Joseph, Job, Paul, and Jesus all saw through the cloud. Sometimes the silver lining is simply this: He is with me. Immanuel. God with us in the storm.
Biblical examples of seeing the silver lining:
- Joseph — “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
- Job — “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” (Job 1:21)
- Paul & Silas — Sang hymns at midnight in a prison cell. (Acts 16:25)
- Jesus — “Not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
Steve Jobs: Dots Connect Backward

Jobs stumbled onto a truth Scripture has taught for millennia: we live forward, but we understand backward. God is the One who connects the dots. The worst thing can become the best thing. The cross felt like defeat—it became salvation.
The Tension We Live In
David wrote Psalm 9 after the victory. He had hindsight. But can we give thanks before we see the silver lining? Can we thank God in the cloud, not just after it lifts? Sometimes the dots never connect in this life. Yet we trust the Author.
Reflect:
• Looking back, where can you now see God’s hand in a dark cloud?
• Looking forward, what are you still waiting to understand?
• Right now, what would it look like to give thanks—not for the pain, but in it?
Prayer
Lord, I can’t always see how the dots connect. I can’t always find the silver lining. But I choose to trust You—the One who sees the end from the beginning. Thank You that even the things meant to break me, You can use to make me. Give me eyes to see Your hand, backward and forward, and a heart that gives thanks in the waiting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Read Psalm 9. Notice how David moves from personal thanksgiving (vv. 1–2) to declaring God’s character (vv. 7–10) to calling others to praise (v. 11). Thanksgiving is the doorway into deeper worship. Let it lead you there today.
