A Devotion on Proverbs 19:21 & Proverbs 3:5–6

Proverbs 19:21 — “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 — “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

We are natural-born planners. Nothing wrong with planning—wisdom requires it. But danger lies in assuming our plans are guaranteed, and worse, executing them with the world’s playbook.

Proverbs 19:21 draws a sharp contrast between our many plans and God’s single purpose. Our plans change; God’s purpose is unshakable. How do we move from making plans to participating in His purpose? Two costly disciplines:

❶ Ask the Lord first.

Before you write the first line of your to-do list, pause. Not as a formality, but as dependence: “Lord, before I move, do You want me to move at all?” This turns planning from self-expression into obedience.

❷ Execute within God’s values.

Many plans start with God but execute with the world’s playbook—cutting corners, manipulating, chasing glory. God’s values mean:

• Truthfulness over spin (Prov 12:22)
• Generosity over greed (Luke 12:33)
• Servant-heartedness over self-promotion (Mark 10:43–45)
• Rest over burnout (Ex 20:8–10)
• Love as the final filter: “Does this plan serve people or use them?” (1 Cor 16:14)

When you ask first and execute faithfully, Proverbs 3:6 kicks in: “He will make your paths straight.” He doesn’t just override your plans—He redirects them. Your detour becomes His direct route.

Think of Joseph (sold as slave, became prime minister) or Paul (stopped on Damascus road). Human plans collapsed—God’s purpose prevailed.

✧ Before you launch anything today

—email, project, conversation—pause and ask:

1. “Lord, are You in this?” (asking Him first)
2. “Would I be proud to do this if Jesus were physically in the room?” (executing within His values)

If both are clear, move with bold confidence—you’re not just planning; you’re partnering.

🙏 Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the anxiety I create clinging to my own plans. Today I surrender my schedule, dreams, and worries. Before I speak or move, prompt me to ask first. Anchor me in Your values—truth, generosity, humility, and love. I trust that even when I don’t understand the detour, You steer the destination. Let Your purpose prevail—not despite my plans, but through them. Amen.
